Attracted to Science: Hands-on Exploration of Magnetism
My students need physics equipment and resources to explore the relationship between electricity and magnetism through active experimentation and inquiry.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Brown's classroom raised $549

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you take and love physics in high school? For many the answer is, unfortunately, no. Some teachers emphasize memorizing math equations without giving students a conceptual understanding. The best way to learn physics is through investigation using quality equipment. Give my students that chance.
Describing my students as having led challenging lives is an understatement.
My students come from a district where the high school drop-out rate is well above 50%, and yet they have succeeded in reaching their final year of high school.
These seniors enrolled in physics to challenge themselves even more, and to develop the problem-solving skills necessary for college. However, given budget constraints, our school does not have the funds to adequately stock laboratory supplies for physics.
My Project
With your help, my students will begin with the opportunity to explore basic magnetism using permanent magnets, iron fillings, and steel balls. You will also give my students compasses to measure the direction of magnetic field lines surrounding any magnet.
Then we will investigate the more complex relationship between electricity and magnetism as students use magnets to generate current and use batteries to create magnetic fields. Using that equipment, my students can explore and verify Lenz's Law.
Your donation will provide my students with a large electromagnet. They will be able to marvel at its strength and ability to lift over 220 pounds. Also included as an attention grabbing phenomenon is a ball that glows when held in your hands. You will provide a galvanometer so my students can gather and analyze accurate data. The galvanometer allows students to specifically detect and measure any current produced. These are just a few activities that my students will enjoy thanks to your generosity.
My school is offering physics for the first time since opening seven years ago.
Since our school continues to improve, we were able to offer this cohort the option of physics. While I am excited to bring physics to my school, we lack the materials to truly bring the subject to life.
It takes time and money to build a proper supply of science equipment. Unfortunately, this year's students have neither. Funding this project will hugely impact my students as we begin investigating electromagnetism.
