Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 4 sections of 7th and 8th graders. We are a Leader in Me school and I am so proud of my leaders. We live in Chicago and we are in an area that is being gentrified. Most of my students are coming in with a lot of baggage from home. A well some of them are not financially well off as others. We are also in the throws of great financial hardship in Chicago Public Schools. Our budgets are being cut and we teachers are being asked to buy more.

My students deserve a chance to have the supplies they need in order to grow.

They are competing with top students from other Chicago schools where their parents or their school budget is more plentiful. We have very few behavior problems and lots of drive to succeed.

My Project

We are currently sharing calculators in the classroom. Often students who don't have a calculator get the answers from others or it takes twice as long to get the calculations done.

Calculators are necessary in middle school.

While we still use paper and pencil for basic calculations, it becomes tedious and possibly opens the door for errors. We investigate how to find cube and square roots and we need a calculator for this. Decimal and percents are also much easier to work with using a calculator. Correctly knowing how to use the calculator and the different functions it has is also a learning possibility. This will be a tremendous appreciated gift!
