Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day, my students face challenges before they enter the school building, ranging from extreme poverty, single-parent households where the parent works multiple jobs, students with incarcerated parents, and many students who live in shelters. 

My students respond well to positive reinforcement with tangible rewards to improve attendance.

My Project

I am a Social Worker in the South Bronx working at a middle school seeking tangible rewards to help motivate my students who come to school late or have frequent absences.

Especially after having most of my students learn remotely for the past year and a half, having the students physically in the school building to support them academically and socially is crucial this school year.

Some of my students already have several absences and even more are coming to school at the end of the first academic period. This will have long-term academic and social effects if it continues.

At our school, we have made the acronym Attendance H.E.R.O. (Here Everyday Ready On Time). During our Friday assemblies, I want to celebrate those students who have improved attendance and arrival times over the course of the week. Our students respond well to tangible rewards and having gift cards will motivate them to become a H.E.R.O.
