My Students

My students are part of the Adaptive Curriculum program at a local inner city school. You would have a hard time finding a group of high school students that are as happy to be here as my kids are. They come off the bus smiling, excited and so very eager. "Morning, Ms. M.! What are we learning today!?" is my standard greeting. Each one of my students learns in a different way and at a different pace, but none of that matters to them. They just want to learn!

My students are my inspiration, my reason for coming back to the classroom.

Their passion for learning something new, their kindness, their desire to help others often before helping themselves makes me even more determined to give them every opportunity possible.

My Project

A huge part of our students' education is learning job skills. This year our students were unable to go out into the community for internships. We were blessed to have a carpenter agree to come in and work with us each week. He taught our students how to use drills, sanders, and saws to build various items. The most cherished piece the students built was a large, sturdy chair for one of our students with Autism. Sadly, in January our carpenter friend had to move away.

We aren't ready to put our carpentry belts up just yet!

We still have projects that need to be finished and several that have yet to be started.

The children are learning and practicing important life skills like measurement, problem-solving, reading & following directions, and safety. The goal is to make at least 2 more chairs, continue making birdhouses and finish our heart-shaped candle holders. Our students need a saw with a stand to cut the lumber for the chairs and birdhouses. They will then need drills and drill bits for assembly. The hand sander will be used to sand the chairs, candle holders, and birdhouses. We are asking for a jigsaw so that the students can continue making birdhouses and various candle holders. As with everything we do, safety is very important. We will need safety glasses for the children.

The carpentry skills alone could turn into a job for some. Even if that doesn't happen, the confidence they have gained in themselves is worth more than most people will ever understand. Help us continue to help our students grow and develop into amazing adults.
