I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher in a Title I public school in rural Southwest Virginia. I teach in a growing program of six Pre-K classrooms with a total of 92 students. I am responsible for teaching all areas of the curriculum including mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies. Being a Title I school, 47% of our students receive free or reduced lunch prices. This is indicative of the low income of our residents. Often times, both parents work at minimum wage jobs to sustain the family. Most operate on a high school diploma or GED as higher education has been seen as a luxury. This attitude toward education frequently carries through the generations in our rural farming community. I believe we can overcome this obstacle by providing a high-quality, multi-faceted education to our students beginning with our youngest learners, our Pre-K students. It is becoming increasingly important that we seek out new and better ways of teaching as we strive to prepare our students for the technologically driven world in which they will work as adults. Our geographical region and tax base limit what we are able to provide in the way of life experiences and innovative materials; therefore, we must seek out grants as a way to supplement our program. I am requesting materials that will maximize my mathematics instruction and reach even the most reluctant learners. I request a library of materials that teaches mathematics concepts through story, song, and dance. Key concepts such as colors, shapes, and counting are taught through stories and songs. By also including physical movement, auditory learners, visual learners, musical learners, kinesthetic learners, and intrapersonal learners are all being reached. I have seen even the most reluctant learners "come alive" with music. The design of these materials allows them to be used in whole group, small group, and individualized sessions. Each set of big books addresses an individual concept including a catchy song to reinforce the skills as well as an activity guide to extend the lessons. Because of the physical location and financial constraints of our area, teachers are often limited as to the quantity and quality of materials and as to the variety of real life experiences that can be presented to our students. By funding this grant, you will help at least 92 children learn important mathematical concepts in an innovative and fun way. By teaching students with methods that reach their needs and learning styles, we can overcome the stereotypical attitudes that hinder future achievement and higher education. I refuse to believe that we cannot do better. I hope that with your help, my students and I can sing at the top of our lungs all that we have learned with these materials.
