Assistive Technology to Support Reading and Writing
Help me give my students scanner pens to help with reading and writing! Lots of my 6th grade Special Education students read and write far below grade level, and would benefit from the added support of the scanners.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach 6th grade Special Education at a Title I school in the South Bronx. Most of my students read and write far below grade level, and require additional assistance in order to complete their classwork. For students with dyslexia and English Language Learners, reading and writing are even more challenging. These students receive lots of support from teachers and classroom aides but lack a level of independence that comes with being able to read and write on their own.
By funding my project of text scanner pens, you will be giving these students a sense of independence and pride in themselves and their school work.
With the scanner pens, the students will be able to have text read to them, either in English or in their native language, and will be able to dictate their thoughts the pen will scribe for them. This allows them to complete classwork more independently, and take ownership over their education. In addition, this will free up teachers and classroom aides to support students in other meaningful ways.
The students I teach work hard every single day to improve their reading and writing. They feel lots of anxiety about reading and writing, and are aware of their needs. Being able to work independently more often in class would help bolster their self-esteem and help them take pride in themselves and their abilities. These pens would be used every single day in our classroom, and would greatly increase the access students have to grade level texts.
