My Students
Did you know children who are raised in a house of professionals are exposed to approximately 1,500 more words per hour than those living in poverty? This affects children's ability to effectively communicate and comprehend complex texts while reading. Let's change that together!
My 5th grade students attend an inner city NYC public school where 98.4% of the student population receive free lunch.
They are a mixed population which includes students with IEPs and special needs. Many come from homes where they don't have quiet places to read or rely solely on the books from our classroom library to read for leisure. I try to supply them with the tools necessary to become life long readers, but fall short with vocabulary supplies since this is often overlooked but expected to get done through the content areas.
My Project
I am requesting 20 sets of dictionaries, thesauri, and vocabulary builder books. This will assist my students since many cannot afford the better quality dictionaries that are sold in bookstores and usually show up with the thin one bought at the dollar store if any at all. Also I am requesting curriculum guides to guide my planning of vocabulary curriculum.
Using the resources I requested, I will use their current reading levels to set up multiple sets of weekly vocabulary words so that students feel comfortable using these words colloquially and in their academic work. I am also requesting alternative resources to try to make the stressful task of test prep fun.
Although there isn't allocated time in the schedule or resources to teach vocabulary and spelling skills, your help can change that!
