Assist a 1st Grade Class to Increase their Reading Fluency Through Sight Words

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Thank You for considering this proposal! I am the teacher of 22 wonderful First Grade students at San Pedro St. Elementary School. The school is located in downtown Los Angeles, near the Garment District. It is a 4-Track K-5 school. Our enrollment is about 720 students, where 93.5% are English Language Learners and 100% are Socio-economically disadvantaged.
As a First grade teacher I know that the more we read, the better we get at it, and the more we read, the more we enjoy it. One technique that works well in getting a child involved in reading is building word recognition skills, which means, increasing the number of words that a student can recognize effortlessly and without thought. Sight Words or High Frequency Words are words that can be recognized effortlessly and without thought, in other words "automatically". Imagine if my students could recognize on sight 8 of the 10 words in the sentence before him or her can read that sentence and, generally, decode the remaining words by means of context, phonics, or illustrations. Dolch Sight Words comprise from 60 to 85% of the text in children's early reading materials. Therefore, a child who knows the Dolch Words has much of the base needed to recognize the majority of the words in a typical selection.
The following proposal includes the purchase of a collection of Dolch sight word/ High Frequency words resources that will reinforce the critical importance of sight words in order to better assist my students improve their reading fluency. This would include a pocket chart and an adjustable Pocket Chart Stand that can be used to post the daily's new high frequency words introduced and to review the previously learned words, also it would include several sight word games for sight word practice, such as the Sight-Word Bingo Game Set, and a Tubs O' Sight-Words set & Practice Cards that would be perfect for providing the hands-on reinforcement students need to really master each word. Last but not least, this proposal would also include the purchase of individual take-home sets of sight word rings for each of my 22 students for further practice.
