Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Thank you for considering this proposal! I am the teacher of 22 wonderful 1st Grade students at San Pedro St. Elementary School. The school is located in downtown Los Angeles, near the Garment District. It is a 4-Track K through 5 school. Our enrollment consists of 720 students, where 93.5% are English Language Learners and 100% are Socio-economically disadvantaged. Writer's Workshop time is an exciting time of the day for all my 1st Grade students. It is the time when they brainstorm their ideas, put them down on paper, and most importantly, share them and publish them. Developing effective writing skills is essential from the beginning of their journey as writers, and I believe that my students would highly benefit from the Six Trait Writing Model. This instruction model allows teachers to pinpoint students' strengths and weaknesses pertaining to ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation, and, from there, to plan and carry out instructions, making this writing instruction and learning process more meaningful to all students. The purchase of a collection that would include the essential resources for implementing this Six Trait Writing Model would be powerful because my students would take writing more seriously when they know that their creative efforts will be enhanced, polished and preserved. This would include a Six Trait Writing Model complete guide for the Primary Grades, Traits of Writing charts, games to practice their writing traits, quick reference guides for each student, writing journals and assessment materials. Students can constantly refer to the charts to help them plan their writing or they can look at their personal quick reference guides for further assistance. They can also acknowledge the importance of their writing pieces when saved in their own writing journals. My students and I thank you for taking the time to read our proposal!
