Assessing the Effectiveness of Genki Balls in the Ala Wai
Help me give my students the tools necessary to monitor water quality in the Ala Wai Canal and help document the process.

My Project
Thanks to previous donors, we were able to get supplies to make Genki Balls, which are mud balls containing microorganisms to help break down the sludge accumulating in the Ala Wai Canal. In the past, we were able to advocate and help spread awareness of the canal and the issues it faces. We are now requesting a Portable Turbidity Meter and Canon Color Ink/Paper Set.
Water quality measurements, such as pH, salinity, and turbidity, help provide evidence if the Genki Balls' bioremediation is making a difference.
While we have tools to measure pH and salinity, we do not have an accurate tool to measure water clarity. Funding of this project will help us gather data, as well as have a device on hand that can be used by others who are also collaborating with us in restoring the Ala Wai Canal.
