Research proves that English Language Learners (ELLS) need a significant amount of time interacting with one another, practicing the language associated with all content areas. My students thrive in settings where they collaborate and create meaningful connections to content.
As their English as a Second Language teacher, it is my job to create interactive learning experiences that link English to the content of the classroom.
These butterflies will help me do this by bringing this important science content to life with hands-on materials.
Our school is a small charter school in Minnesota. The school is 70-75% English Language Learners, most students speak Hmong or Karen as their first language.
The students I work with are in Kindergarten and 1st grade, and they are excited to learn and be at school. They need plenty of opportunities to engage with each other in learning about science while building confidence in English.
My Project
We are requesting hand magnifiers and the butterfly kit that includes 33 larvae, which we will observe throughout their life cycle and transform into Painted Lady Butterflies! These butterflies provide an opportunity to engage in whole group and partner work during science class. Students will make predictions, ask questions, and record their observations in a science notebook.
Please help me to realize the potential in each of the young people I work with.
The quote below is taped on my desk to remind me of these possibilities, and your donations help me to do this important work.
"As educators, whether we are practitioners, researchers, or youth advocates, our work is important because it centered squarely on the day-to-day possibilities of young people"
