My Students

My classroom is located in an urban school district, where many students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom.

My classroom consists of 15, four and five year old students of varied cognitive and social emotional levels.

There are at least 7 languages besides English that are spoken by my students. The languages include: Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Tagalog, Arabic, Urdu and Spanish. Despite these differences, the overall dynamic of my classroom is fantastic. The children enjoy helping and working with each other.

The children in my Pre-kindergarten class come to school everyday excited to find out what kind of adventures await them. They are a curious bunch 3 and 4 year old children who ask a lot of questions and love to share their many ideas. They have become wonderful friends and a great team while embracing each others differences and supporting each other's interests.

My Project

Storytelling and book making has become an integral part of our pre-kindergarten class. My students get very excited about sharing their ideas, interests and experiences with their teachers and classmates. I wasn't surprised that the children would love making a book of their own but it was surprising that they wanted to make them everyday for weeks. Before we knew it, our supplies started to run low. We desperately need magic markers and paper to keep the interest of book making and story telling alive.

Storytelling is a unique way for students to develop an understanding and appreciation of what is happening in their own lives as well as the lives of others around them.

As children become authors, they begin a lifelong love of reading and books.

I would love to continue to encourage each of my students to feel confident in expressing themselves, and I believe that book making is just what so many of these young children need to develop basic socialization, emotional and communication skills.

We look forward to making our end of the year book that will include photographs, drawings and stories of our wonderful time together in Pre-K.
