My students need an Orton Gillingham based reading and spelling program, Levels 3-10, to provide instruction in Phonemic Awareness using a multi-sensory based program.
I am a Speech/Language Teacher at a Title I school. It is located in an economically under-privileged area. I work with students that are diagnosed with language-based learning disabilities and Dyslexia. My students are frustrated by their poor phonemic awareness skills and inability to read.
I work with students that have been diagnosed with language-based learning disabilities/and or Dyslexia.
Although, I work with a selected group of students as a speech therapist, data has shown that the issue of literacy or illiteracy is a major issue widely effecting the entire school population. My focus is on providing unique individualized instruction in Phonemic Awareness using an Orton-Gillingham based reading program, called the Barton Reading and Spelling Program. This program is supported by research and one of the 7 programs supported by the Orton-Gillingham Society. My wish is to implement and expand the use of this program to my students, to my fellow speech teachers and to the classroom teachers through Professional Development.
My Project
My students would benefit from the purchase of the Barton Reading and Spelling Program. It is a simultaneous multi-sensory explicit phonics approach that teaches students how to read and spell. It teaches students to sound out instead of memorizing. The program shows the logic of language starting with the most common spelling patterns. There are ten levels in the Barton System. Only when the student masters the end of one level would you get to the next level. The Barton Reading and Spelling System is one of the seven well known Orton-Gillingham based systems. The Barton System's strength is on the teaching of spelling. In addition, the program also teaches grammar, basic capitalization and punctuation, morphology (how to determine the meaning of a word by knowing the meaning of the pieces), prosody (how to read aloud with proper phrasing), and improve fluency (reading speed). All of the elements that the Barton System teaches are connected to the five pillars of reading.

If I had the Barton Reading and Spelling Program in my therapy room, in the classrooms and in the students' lives, we would be providing the hope the students desperately need to become literate.
