Can you remember what it was like the first time you stand in front of the class and explained how you arrived at the correct answer? My students are yet to experience such feelings, wouldn't it be nice if they could all experience that feeling!
I am a middle school math teacher in a high-needs school in New York.
I teach 100 8th grade students twenty five periods every week. Our school serves 1,849 students. We have a very diverse population in which 10% are African American, 34% are Hispanic or Latino, 52% are Asian, or other Pacific Islanders and 4% are white . We are a high-need community in which 100% of our population qualifies for free lunch.
My students are visual learners who love to share knowledge with each other, watching them work together is pleasing to the eye.
Instead of my students waiting on me to explain to them how to solve a problem, each of their partners can do the explanation using these resources. Using these boards and markers students will develop the skill of explaining with their own words a skill they need for the state tests.
My Project
These white boards and markers will help my students to work independently, they will be able to explain to me how they arrived at their answer and quickly make corrections if needed.
They can also be used in small groups to share what they have learn with each other. My students would be able to explain to each other (i.e their partner) quietly without disrupting the entire class.
Using these boards they would be creative. They will be able to correct each other without embarrassment hence developing a positive attitude towards each other.
Using these resources will help shy students develop their great self esteem and think positively which they need everyday in their lives!!!
Children likes to know they they are leaders, giving them this opportunity will make them better citizens of tomorrow.
Making this a reality needs great effort which i can start in my class room by using these resources. Students will be able to express themselves because they will be able to show ownership to their work on their own white board. Doing group work using these white boards will enable them to take responsibilities for their group hence wanting to do things correctly for each other
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
