Asian Lanterns

My Students

Have you every had the opportunity to paint? If the answer is yes, consider yourself lucky as not everyone gets to do this. Painting encourages creativity and soothes the soul. I would like our students to get this opportunity.

We are a culturally diverse urban school.

Most of our students are on free and reduced lunches. Because the California budget is so limited, we don't have money for the arts programs. We need supplies in order to have a culturally diverse program.

My Project

With the rulers, watercolor paints and water color paper we will be able to create Asian watercolor lanterns. Students will learn about Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and other Asian cultures who create paper lanterns. Students will also learn about the annual Hawaiian Floating Lantern ceremony. Students will create 4 watercolor panels and then will string them together to create a lantern. We will hang these lanterns in a ceremony for Chinese new year.

These supplies will enable our students to experience the use of watercolor and other cultures instead of just reading about it.
