This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are a diverse group with a wide-range of backgrounds and experiences. The COVID pandemic brought many challenges for our kids and they're slowly getting back on track with what school and learning are all about. Last year, the students were wary of both me and this huge, intimidating room of books.

Watching them grow this year from "ugh, library time" to "yay, library time!" has been incredibly rewarding and wonderful.

I'd love to reward and encourage their interest in the library (and reading!) by purchasing some of the books they've suggested. We've created a great system for students to suggest new books or topics for the library. By reading the books they are most interested in - even if that topic seems frivolous or silly to adults - my students can improve their reading skills and start to make up some of the learning loss created by the COVID pandemic. When students feel like partners in choosing their own books, they get more excited about reading and learning and are more likely to continue those habits their whole lives.
