As Ink Flows Freely, the Next Chapter Will Be Written!

Help me give my students ink cartridges for our classroom printer so students may print their writing masterpieces (and the many drafts that precede those masterpieces)!

My Project

We are a Title I public elementary school in a large urban community in Missouri, the Show Me State.

Our Kindergarten classroom is composed of all boys.

Our school is comprised of gender-specific classrooms to maximize gender-based learning and teaching strategies. One of the most prominent themes in teaching strategies for boys is to get them up and away from their desks while learning.

We work on writing in our Writing Center. Students love moving to the Writing Center during Center Rotation but many do not love moving pencils on paper. I would like to introduce written composition utilizing technology and printing drafts to help engage reluctant writers.

I would like to get my young students comfortable with written expression through the use of technology. I believe those reluctant writers who struggle with letter formation and fine motor skills are reticent when challenged to express their thoughts in written form. By giving them the option of speaking or typing their words using technology and printing them, they will see their thoughts printed in text format similar to what they find in the books they read. My hope is they will then feel empowered to strengthen and practice their growing written expression skills. As my kindergartners become more technologically advanced and skilled in composing sentences, they will be anxious to publish more work via technology and our classroom printer. This requires lots of paper (a resource we do have) and ink (a resource that is very limited and no longer provided by our school).
