As I Live And Breathe!

My students need a model of the human respiratory system. Having system models adds the elements of seeing and touching to enhance learning.

My Students

Do you remember hearing a lecture or reading a textbook and still not be able to understand or see an idea in your minds eye or grasp a concept? The adage of "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand" holds true here. Models for hands-on work enhances learning!

Our school population, at this IB school, is comprised of economically challenged students.

I love my students! Despite the challenges they face they are a group of students that want and love to learn. Thus, my Health class is a place that the desire to learn runs high.

My Project

This life-size reproduction will offer a comprehensive view of the complete human respiratory system for my students. The seven sections reveal the larynx, lungs, and heart. The students can take the model apart as they study the different organs. The model has a key identifying the structures of the system that can be used by students to test each other. This respiratory system model will be used in three different ways, with two different subjects. First, in the Health classroom, the model will be used in the "respiratory system unit" so the students can see and touch the different parts of the system. We will also use the model when we discuss diseases of the respiratory system. A third way the model will be used is in the "Anatomy and Physiology" class as the system and its parts are broken down and dissected for further understanding.

Enhancing the learning of my students could net us a doctor that cures lung cancer, or emphysema, or even asthma!

With several of our students desiring to enter the medical field, a classroom with many models and hands-on activities will help them begin to reach that goal.
