I am a Special Education Teacher, an Art Teacher, and a Co-Teacher of ICT classes of Science in a Title One School.
I find that when I integrate all subjects with art, I have amazing results. I also teach afterschool as the Literacy and Art teacher. My school is struggling in reading and math and need many different teaching styles. I teach them using a hands on approach using art for engagement. My students are very creative and learn best through hands on projects. I've tied many core subjects to the arts with great success.
My Project
I would like to have my students begin journaling in sketchbooks, as well as writing in words what they experience in their daily lives. I try to incorporate STEAM in my lessons whenever possible to tie in Science, Math, Literacy and Art.
My students have never experienced using India Ink or Water Color paints.
I would like to expose them to new art materials used in the real world. Their writing in journals will also promote Literacy in the Arts.
I would love my students to do a sketch using charcoal pencils of an observational object. Then I would like them to make a small window box and focus on only a part of their sketch. I would like them to do another picture (all in their sketchbooks) using a piece of their first drawing and make a larger imaginary piece (taking the picture wherever they feel) using india ink and a twig from a tree found outside in nature. They can use water color paints to add in some color. They would then have to write about what inspired them to make their picture.
My students will do a gallery walk looking at their friends work, and learn to compliment what they liked, or use critique in a nice way to give the artist some new ideas on expanding if they wanted to.
This will make a huge difference in their art education. I will then take photos of their work and put it on Artsonia, which is a portfolio on line for the children to keep and their parents to view as progress of their work.
