This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students and I live in the greatest city in the world, Los Angeles. They are taking a Los Angeles History elective which is offered four times a year to 6th graders. In Los Angeles History class, students engage critically with their city’s history to understand why things are the way they are. It gives students an opportunity to look critically at the policies and decisions that shaped their city which prepares them for the challenging discussions they will participate in during their high school ethnic studies courses.
My students will see themselves directly reflected in the curriculum, which offers access points to overarching history and language arts concepts.
Students use an interdisciplinary approach to develop fundamental critical thinking and comparative analysis skills by anchoring studies to places all students know and experience. They will use these wonderful books to do research on their city. Their studies of Los Angeles will connect with visual and digital art projects that will allow them to showcase their learning in a variety of ways.
