Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students sometimes have difficulty envisioning what is happening in the books they read. Having the ability to re-create a strong visual image to further comprehension is an essential part of their learning process.

We are an inclusive elementary school class in a high poverty area where over 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch.

Parents are facing greater challenges than in the past because of recent economic conditions and we're finding that more and more students are coming to school without supplies, books or materials.

My Project

Many of our students are 2-3 years behind grade level and have difficulty comprehending texts and holding onto information as they read. Students are coming to school with less materials that foster an enriching learning environment. In addition, many of these students are deflated from failing tests and being held back year after year. Therefore, we need to think outside of the box and engage students in a motivating and exciting learning environment. Some of the items needed are construction paper, glue sticks, scissors, modeling clay, markers and colored pencils. We want students to be able to take the materials to make stories come to life by recreating images and scenes once a text is read out loud. We feel that by being able to create a tangible, visual image, students will be able to hold onto information. Giving students the ability to be creative while reading will motivate them to read more and more.

When learning is not correlated with success students become less and less motivated to come to school ready to work.

Arts and crafts have been proven to highly motivate and engage students - and what better way to bring a book to life? When these children finally feel engaged and successful suddenly learning is not something to fear.
