My Project

Covid-19 is still rampant here in Hawai'i. Our students have been impacted greatly. We live in a small, rural town, and during the height of COVID-19, students were isolated even more at home. We did provide them with online and eventually hybrid learning, but they missed some of the most important social-building times of their lives. It has been three years since COVID-19, yet we are still feeling its impact.

I have found that bringing arts and crafts back into my classes has helped students to express themselves in ways that they may have not experienced in a long time.

We had to give up art in my school, which I did not agree with. In turn, I have been using art as a tool in my classes. The students not only create for school projects, but sometimes students come in during their lunch or recess to do something with their hands and simply create.

Art is also a useful tool for me to have discussions with my students focusing on Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Sometimes they feel awkward being asked how they feel about certain things, but by having them do something with their hands, their neurons are firing, their hands are busy, and they can have these chats with me about their emotions, growth, and/or concerns without feeling put on the spot.

The air dry clay, paint, brushes, mini canvases, and glue will be used for creating models, used in science, social studies, and advisory classes. The lamination sheets will be used to help me create and print SEL materials for my classes. Students can also use the sheets to protect their work if needed. The headphones will be offered to my ASD students.
