FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. A.'s classroom raised $394
This project is fully funded
I am an elementary school teacher at a diverse Title 1 school located in Morganton, North Carolina.
We have received a grant for a resident artist to spend some time in our school this month teaching the children how an an artist expresses him or herself through art. We have many children who need a greater opportunity to develop fine motor skills, so we see the resident artist as a "catch" to intrigue children who might not have otherwise seen a need to develop these skills for any other reason. It would be an enriching experience (before, during and after the time the resident is with us) for these children who come from so many diverse backgrounds to have the chance to study the biographies of a variety of artists around the world.
They will also share in read alouds and explorations to find out how artists use elements of design such as shape, color, line, tone, patterns, textures and mediums to create their works. We would begin this study by reading aloud several of the biographies of famous artists. We would go on-line to visit galleries of their artwork and explore how primary colors are combined to make secondary colors. We would use interactive on-line sites to create on-line art, symbolic of the artists from the time period we are studying. We would also spend time simulating artwork typical of the artists style from a particular time period.
An example of this would be cubism. We would partner read about artist who practiced cubism (for example). As we are reading we would come up with two or three things that artist did to create this style of art. Then, we would come together to have a discussion of what our findings were. Following, we would have an oral reading of one of the book we are requesting about shape and see how the artist used that element of design as we add ideas to a learning map. We would then take the opportunity to see how the artwork compares to illustrations in the children's book choice readings. Then, we would take the opportunity to create a piece of artwork in this syle and write about what we have created and why.
The artist in residence gives us a chance to inspire the children to read biographies, compare different art styles, study shapes, enhance fine motor skills, and to explore the emotions and expressions they have. This would add to their intellectual, physical and mental well beings. I would like to request a series of primary biographies that convey the life and works of famous artists as well as a series of 5 books explaining how artist use these elements of design.
This will tie in well with helping the children define the elements of a biography, study the passages of time in history, and study the life of important artists who brought characteristics from all parts of the world to their artwork. I am interested in this project because I would like to help the children understand cultural awareness through art as they develop other skills that can be enhanced by this interesting subject of art. I would like them to develop an appreciation of one another and the world around them.
