I am a looping teacher in a 4th and 5th grade school in a rural community in Mississippi. Looping means I teach them in 4th grade and then go up to 5th grade with them the 2nd year. I teach all academic subjects to 26 students.
Federal and state funding covers basic educational tools and materials. While these funds are capable of meeting basic educational needs, my students are interested in 2 areas that are not as readily funded: technology and art. We do have one computer and printer with Internet access, but its use is limited due to class size! Students receive art education once weekly and have shown an interest in this area. I currently do not have school funds to implement a new approach to teaching.
To more fully engage student in all academic subjects, I will implement an art-infused method of teaching concepts in math, reading, science, social studies, and character education. It will involve studying famous artists, different art mediums, and styles of art. Students will be creating art projects that demonstrate the academic concepts being taught, using what they have learned in the supplemental art studies. This will benefit my students because they will be more actively engaged in the learning process and use a more hands on approach to learning. The two digital cameras and printer docks requested in this proposal will aid students in their projects. They will be able to photograph their completed projects and share them using PowerPoint with families and classmates. Using the cameras will also help them in demonstrating skills learned, such as completing a geometry scavenger hunt. They could photograph real-life examples of different concepts, then print the pictures to share with others.
Be incorporating their love of art and technology to the academic subjects they are already learning, students will be able to make more meaningful connections to what is being presented and become more actively engaged.
