Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Visualizing creativity: As a veteran teacher of seventeen years, I have had the opportunity to teach and inspire many a talented young artist from grades 9 through 12. My school has a four year visual arts curriculum that allows students to study and develop their personal voice, with the hope of attending a post secondary school of art/design upon graduation. Our school is 78% free or reduced lunch with a large population of the students being special ed or ESL. I service all of these students on a regular daily basis.

Through my years here I have witnessed the demise of an art gallery that would house the exhibitions of art classes, on a regular basis; I have witnessed display cases being permanently "taken over" by sports, JROTC and trophies: I have been told to remove art work from walls outside my art studio because it is a fire hazard; I have struggled with securing art work to the brick walls of my art studio, only to have the work fall off due to too much heat or not enough heat. I have become frustrated and my students have become disappointed.

Trying to rectify this unhappy situation I am interested in securing a permanent space for the display of my students' art work - a space that is not in violation of the fire code for the building, a space that is permanently affixed to the wall outside my art studio, a space that will become my art studio gallery - a space such as a large display bulletin board permanently affixed to the wall. This display case will provide my students the opportunity to exhibit their proficient creations to their peers ,their teachers and their school community. It will provide opportunities for building self esteem, for the school community will actually "see" what artist do instead of having it described to them. The display case will also enable the student/artist to "see" what other student artist in other classes are doing. It will be used as a venue to honor the "art student of the month". It will support the creative efforts and hard work of all of my students - grade 9 through 12.

It is my hope that you will find this a worth while investment because you will be investing in the future lives and careers of my art students. Your help will guarantee that my students have a "visual voice" in their school - a voice that can be shared and appreciated for what it is - a glimpse into the creative minds and hearts of my students.
