This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title 1 elementary school in Arizona. Our students come from diverse economic and ethnic backgrounds. Over 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch daily. We service English, Spanish, French, and Arabic speaking families.
My school's mission focuses on academic, fitness, and personal achievements for both students and staff.
We believe all students can be successful and we try to give them all the tools they need to reach their goals. Our staff teaches after school clubs throughout the year that range from art and dance to technology and math. We spend time in our classrooms, on announcements, and at assemblies celebrating the fitness and academic successes of our students and staff.
My Project
My English Language Learner students need more opportunities to read a variety of non-fiction text. Many times, non-fiction books are written at too high a level for them to obtain high comprehension. Having access to the current event articles that are found in TIME for Kids and Scholastic News will give my students a wider variety of non-fiction text to read both at school and at home.
The Scholastic News and TIME for Kids news articles will give my students the chance to read about current events that are happening around the world.
These articles will enable us to have relevant class discussions about events that are happening in real time. When we finish reading and studying these articles, my students will be able to take the magazines home. This will give them another opportunity to read them while they share the information with their families.
