This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing. They are all recent immigrants and refugees from every corner of the world. They come from over 30 countries and speak over 35 languages. They are hardworking, dedicated, supportive, creative and generally wise beyond their years. I am always in awe of my students and am inspired by them every single day.
Knowing this is not their ideal senior year, I'd love to ensure they have some resources for a creative outlet to process the double pandemic they are living in.
My Project
One of the Maya Angelou quotes I have posted in my classroom says, "You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have." This year I will be teaching a broader Humanities class, which will include more creative arts than usual. Some students will be fully virtual, while some will be part-time in school and part-time learning from home. I would love to be able to provide all students with a kit of art supplies that they can carry with them to and from school (or just use at home).
For my English Language Learners, being able to experience and create art is such an essential part of developing their understanding of the English language.
And now more than ever, creative expression is a powerful tool to help students create, connect, and hopefully heal.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
