Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. The students must be in a lower income bracket to qualify for pre-k. Many of their parents are either from Hispanic countries or are first-generation Americans. It is in the classroom that my four and five year olds first develop their feelings about school, learning how it relates to them. They come in eager and ready to learn about the world around them. They love learning through play especially through art.
My Project
Many skills are developed when the students are in the art center. The integration of art into the classroom helps create problem-solving routines. Fine motor and eye-hand coordination are reinforced through painting, cutting and drawing. Science and math objectives are blended with the planning, design, and construction of an art project. The paint, paper, stamps and items such as pom poms are materials needed for a well-equipped art center.
When children are having fun, they are learning and that feeling will stay with them throughout their school experiences.
Through painting, my students will be able to express ideas about what we have been studying. The very act of finger painting helps the students with spatial concepts and is a great of fun. Enjoying art will spill over to other activities such as journal writing and reading. These art activities will continue to influence how my students will feel about school in the future.
