My Students

Aristotle wrote, "for the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.”

Being hands-on is especially important in the classroom because it allows students to engage in kinesthetic learning.

My Pre-K classroom is composed of a diverse group of learners that come from all walks of life. My students are energetic, eager to learn, and full of love. In our low-income, high poverty campus, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I service a Title I campus that has over 87% of students that are low socio-economically, disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Despite the many challenges my students face, they come to school excited to learn every day.

Early education can play a critical role during this important developmental period. As a Pre-kindergarten classroom teacher, I believe that a hands-on learning environment develops critical thinking skills. I normally use a communal centers approach so providing materials for a safe learning distance can allow my students to gain a better understanding of topics covered in our virtual class, a chance to work together, and practice their skills.

My Project

Social-Emotional Learning is the process through which individuals understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others. SEL is highly important for helping preschool children to practice and master these emotional skills. With these materials we will dive deep and learn how to express ourselves using art, technology, and our voice.

These art supplies will support in creating Scribble Art; Sometimes, we just need to “get the scribbles out;" I have been teaching students how to hold one or many drawing tools and scribble all over a blank sheet of paper or canvas, letting their emotions come out on the paper.

With the camera we will create a Partner Art Trade. Making something for someone else is a great way to encourage students to think about others. The students will create a small artist collage and portrait of themselves with the photos taken with our classroom camera. Intentionally taking the time to focus on creating something for another person specifically strengthens the social awareness and relationship skills of students.

With the use of a simple karaoke machine, students will develop the skills needed to be comfortable with public speaking and sharing with their peers. It’s important to expose students to as many opportunities to speak in front of their peers as possible. When their peers talk, the other students learn to listen. A microphone and speaker have many benefits: It allows the other students to hear the speaker clearly, helping them be more attentive. The student holding the microphone is a visual cue to the other students, so they know it is the speaker’s turn. The student gets used to hearing their own voice and being heard by others, increasing their confidence.
