This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a place where students can explore their own artistic pursuits. Each class starts out with an inspiration session. This could look like an art history lesson, reading a passage from a book together, learning a new art technique, or students sharing something they have learned.

My students continue to amaze me with what they create.

It's a tile one school with a diverse student population. I don't ever want my students to feel like the supplies they have for creating art are not good enough. There are too many situations in their life that try to tell them they are not good enough. My goal as an educator is to do the opposite. To prove to them they are good enough and they should demand the best for themselves and those around them. Getting the best supplies is just one of the ways I can show this to my students.

My Project

The sketchbooks would go to the students that can not afford to pay the class fees in art. Students who are on fee waver or free and reduced lunch don't have to pay fees. However, there is no additional funding to pay for the students that aren't able to pay fees. I don't want to tell a student they can't have a sketchbook just because their parents are not able to afford the fee. Instead I am constantly writing grants to find funding for the sketchbooks to keep equity amid my students. The watercolor brushes would be a new fun tool for the students to use. I am always trying to find something that is different for students to experiment with in class. This keeps art new and allows students to find the best tool to express their creativity.

Showing my students that they are worth it and they deserve the best was talked about already, I think that is part of this.

Creating equality for my students is another huge impact this grant will have. In the end, my hope is that students value themselves and each other. That they expect more from themselves, because they are worth it.
