Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project will engage my sixth graders in a series of art activities designed to build compassion by having them create visual stories that represent the lives and experiences of others. The class sets of washable markers, paint markers, and construction paper will be essential for students to craft vibrant, expressive pieces that capture the emotions and struggles of people from different walks of life.

The project will involve students researching a person or group facing challenges, such as refugees, people in poverty or people experiencing homelessness.

They will then create an art piece that tells that person's story, focusing on their emotions, struggles, and hopes. These artworks will be accompanied by a written reflection on what the students learned about the person they studied and how it has changed their perspective.

The goal is for students to not only understand but to feel the experiences of others, fostering empathy and a deeper connection to the world around them. By displaying their work and sharing their reflections with peers, students will also plan class-led initiatives to support the groups they learned about. Success will be measured by their ability to demonstrate compassion through their artwork, reflections, and the concrete actions they take to make a difference in their community.
