This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the pride you felt bringing home an art project when you were in elementary school? Unfortunately, our school does not have enough money to fund a full time art teacher and I'm left to my own devices.
My students are third graders who live in lower Manhattan.
They are a very diverse bunch from every end of the globe. They are wonderful, enthusiastic learners. Every new unit of study is faced with enthusiasm and wide, open eyes. We are a title one public school with many lower income families.
My Project
A few months ago, we had a teacher from another grade come in as a “guest teacher” and do an art project with my class. They learned how to mix the primary colors to create different shades that they wanted to use. I have never heard my class so quiet and enthralled. I would like to have them paint backgrounds for poetry books that they are writing.
I feel that in a world full of chaos, children need as many outlets as possible to express themselves.
I would love for them to have the supplies they need to become the artists that they crave to be!
