Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am currently teaching 3rd grade in an inner city California school. Our elementary school has free breakfast and lunch and most of my students don't have the funds to explore art after school, so I know I have to find a way to share it with them during the hours I have with them.

Art is the farthest thing from our curriculum team's mind. I teach reading for almost five hours a day and my students deserve to explore with art materials just like the students do in affluent public schools. The students I teach are tickled when I show them construction paper and I know they would love to have the opportunity to make a clay project. Just think, they work so hard during the day and they deserve to have art every now and then!

Mother's Day is coming and I know it would be very special for my students to bring home a hand print with their name home as an invaluable keepsake. Additionally, the pastels and paper will be very exciting for my third graders to use their artistic expression to learn and appreciate art.

I grew up in a very different community from where I teach and I want nothing more than for my students to have the same opportunities that I had growing up. At my arts school in Florida, we were given the chance to discover all of of our individual artistic expression. You will make it possible for my students to take a break from reading instruction and use their creative minds (that should be exercised!) to find new hobbies and interests. Please fund my project to bring art back into our public schools!
