My Students

Students need to train for adult life the same way that professional athletes train for championship games: hard work, dedication, and a growth mindset. By the same token, though, they should take joy and pride in that training, and it is my job to give them that opportunity.

The first thing my students hear each day is, "Welcome, come on in and get logged in.

We've got a lot of work to do!" Their work is to learn, and they just need the tools. They always do the rest. Most come from families experiencing poverty, and about half of them are first-generation immigrants. Many have come from refugee camps and have seen violence in their homelands. Almost two-thirds of them are or were English language learners. At home, they are hearing Somali, Spanish, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Ethiopian, Arabic, and other languages, in addition to English. This may sound like a recipe for chaos and disharmony, but they mix and mingle freely, finding friendship across boundaries of language, skin color, and religion. What strikes me most about these students is how many of them are so eager to learn and reach for a better life for themselves and their families.

My Project

I have hit upon a novel way to motivate my students to interact with classical literature in a more meaningful and engaged way. Many are obsessed with collectible card games like YuGiOh, Pokemon, and Magic The Gathering. I imagined that if we could have students help make and play a similar game based around the literature that we are reading, it would help them engage in the learning. The initial prototype of the card game has been a huge hit, and students are already getting fired up about studying for reading and vocabulary quizzes and participating in class discussions in the hopes of earning more cards for our class competitions.

The best part about this is that a lot of the learning that is going on is what I call "stealth learning" and "gamification." That is, they are improving their learning outcomes without even realizing it because they enjoy what they are doing.

When people play games it opens up neurological pathways in the reward centers of the brain, and also in the region of the brain that control analytical thinking.

My students will be reading technical documents (the rules on the cards) and applying advanced analytical skills to gain a competitive advantage based on that reading. They will be drawing art for the cards based on their interpretation of literary texts like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Romeo and Juliet. They even end up practicing their argumentation skills debating how to interpret rules on particular cards, making claims, providing evidence, and appealing to other students who are acting as referees. These are all part of our standards.

We need the card stock and ink for printing about 9,000 cards. The paper cutter will help us efficiently cut them precisely enough to fit in standard card protector sleeves.
