My Students

Our school is a public magnet school. Students travel from all over town to attend our school. We are not without our struggles, especially when it comes to the school budget. Despite everything, though, our students achieve. Over 90% go on to college; 10% get full scholarships. Our students are diverse and revel in their differences. Groups of friends are multicultural. They are engaged and very bright. These great kids give me hope for the future. Teaching my students is so rewarding. I strive to help them become more creative.

Students in my art classes experiment with crafts, such as sewing, embroidery, and felting, and these forms of creative self-expression give them a new language.

Everyone learns hand-sewing and should learn to use a sewing machine. Crafts have become more and more popular and students enjoy using fabrics and textile techniques. In order to help students have success with their creative ideas, we need a working sewing machine. A new sewing machine will replace our old, broken machine. Having working tools allow students to achieve greater success with their craft ideas.

My Project

In art class, I introduced students to fine artists who use textiles to make their art. Seeing how popular crafts are is inspiring to students. Access to donated fabric samples and learning embroidery gives them lots of ideas. My students combine techniques just as contemporary artists do. Many of our "sewn collages" are stunning. Some are inspired by the art of Van Gogh and Wyeth.

The struggle is real, however, when students and I wrestle with our old hand-me-down sewing machines.

Students become frustrated as they try to get the old machines to work. A few will resort to hand-sewing. At this point I need to bring in a new machine so we can see this work through to completion. The machine I found has a variety of stitch options and is easy to operate. By having this machine available to my creative students, their designs will get even more creative. Every contemporary art room should have a good sewing machine.
