My Students
I am a new Visual Arts Teacher in a District 75 school in Staten Island, New York. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, significant cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and/or multiple disabilities.
My students love coming into art and being able to allow their imaginations to flourish with different mediums and supplies.
My students love hands-on activities that explore their creativity. They are ready for anything! These students deserve the tools to improve their artistic ability. Giving students the best art supplies tells young artists that their artwork is worth it.
My Project
The value of art activities for children with special needs can't be overemphasized! Art activities are good ways to foster self-esteem. Because no work of art is ever "wrong," children with special needs don't need to worry that their art won't be "as good as" others!
Art provides all young children, and especially children with special needs, with an outlet for expression and creativity that enhances learning.
I want my students to take control of the creative process as much as possible by encouraging them to communicate specifically what they want to do. Art experiences are good ways to hold attention and provide children with acceptable, enjoyable ways to express their feelings.
