My Students
Art infuses our world with images, color, history, and math. It is an important part of cultural literacy. In our rural community, opportunities for art exposure are limited. Not only are my students limited by their geographical location, but there is no art teacher at my school due to budget cuts!
If my students are to be exposed to the arts or receive art instruction, it is up to me to provide it.
Please help me infuse cultural literacy in my classroom by supporting my request for art materials. Research shows that students who participate in art programs achieve higher test scores and are more likely to graduate from high school. Not only that, my 4th graders L-O-V-E art! I can sneak in plenty of history and math if I pair it with a good art project - kind of like the mom who hides the veggies in her spaghetti sauce!
My Project
My request for watercolor paper, brushes, watercolor pencils, an instructional book, and black and white copies of famous paintings will begin to open up the world of art for my students. They will select a piece of artwork by one of the Masters and transfer a black and white copy of the masterpiece onto watercolor paper. Next they will color their piece with water soluble colored pencils. Finally, they will transform their penciled piece into a fine watercolor painting by brushing over their work with water. This is a simple way for my students to produce a pleasing piece of artwork with little prior art experience. They will also learn about periods of history, famous artists, and the math concepts inherent in art.
My students live in a world limited by geographical, economical, and racial barriers.
I want to empower them to push past these barriers. Teaching them about history and math through art will help. Education is about opening up the world to students, and part of our world is art. Thank you for helping me teach my students about our world and helping them to move past poverty and into their full potential.
