Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of like everyone else." I love this quote by Syndey Clemons because it encapsulates how art really helps children becoming who they want to be.
My students are in a lower socio-economic school and English is primarily their second language.
They absolutely love when they are able to do art- whether it is in the form of music, paining, theater, or drawing. While we do have a district program that sometimes gives some classes access to art classes it is not uniform for every class. I would love for my class to have supplies for art so we could incorporate weekly or more and tie it to literature, science, and history.
My Project
The state and district does not give us supplies for art or very limited access to art supplies. My students will be able to use these supplies to create art projects that are tied to our thematic literature units as well as science and history units. I would also like to use these materials to introduce students to various important artists throughout time and expose students to various art periods throughout the centuries.
Ultimately, I would hope that by having accessing to art materials students will be able to be themselves.
That they can express who they are freely and feel confident in who they are as a person. In a world where so much of education depends on the "right answer" art allows children to not worry about being right, but in simply expressing their dreams and fears and hopes.
