This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teachers, staff, and parents at our school work together to provide the best learning experiences for our students. Our school community is working hard to meet the needs of all our learners despite the very real challenges of poverty, food insecurity, and violence.

My students are eager for new enrichment opportunities.

These children are remarkable in their ability to persevere and thrive despite a frustrating lack of resources. My biggest challenge as their teacher is finding enough supplies and resources to give them very rich, authentic, and meaningful experiences.

My Project

This summer, I participated in a intensive workshop at the Art Institute of Chicago where I learned how to incorporate American Art as a primary source for research in my classroom.

Science, Technology and Engineering have had a profound impact on human culture and the natural world ; my students are ready to grapple with this topic through the lens of Art!

In order to best incorporate Art into my Science curriculum, I need help to get basic art supplies for my students. If they have the art supplies they need, then they can physically and intellectually immerse themselves in the project because art and science are both multi-sensory experiences!

My 8th grade honors science students will be grappling more intensely with this topic and examining the American Artist, Peter Blume, and his response to the Atomic Bomb in the painting, "The Rock" created in 1944. As part of their research and discovery, students will be investigating the 1940's for cultural and scientific clues to the meaning in this piece. These students will mimic the work of Blume and others in the classroom.These students will use their new art supplies to express their own feelings and ideas about the Atomic bomb. Finally, after a field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago (where "The Rock" is on display) my students will investigate and create their own responses to the ways science, technology, and engineering have influenced their lives and the world around them.

Our culminating event for this project is a Student Showcase on the topic- How does Science, Technology, and Engineering influence humans and the natural world! My students need these art supplies to enrich their understanding and to express themselves in new and creative ways.
