This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a K-5 public school teaching art to young, creative minds. I am the teacher for 18 different classes of about 20 students each, so we use ALOT of art materials here! Can you think back to creating art in your elementary classroom? Bringing it home to share with friends and family was on the of the proudest moments I can personally remember. My students share that pride and strive to create art they can share to spark joy in others.
My students come into art with enthusiasm and an eagerness to immerse themselves in the artistic process!
Their willingness to try new techniques and their curiosity about art materials lends itself to beautiful works of art beyond that of an elementary level. They have a love for books and enjoy the literacy component to any art lesson. It is my goal to provide my students with the materials they need to keep exploring and discovering in the art room.
My Project
I love connecting concepts from other content areas to my art lessons. I feel that it is important to make real life connections and include a variety of subjects to keep my students engaged. Having a carpet will allow the students and myself to sit together for a daily check-in with each other. It is so important to me that I have a sense of community in the art room and having a space we can all go every class will give me that opportunity.
My students love to read and to use literacy connections in their artwork.
Having a carpet will be a perfect place for my students to come together and read a story as a class. My students are noticeably more engaged when I have a place for them to start art calmly. At the rug I will be able to create routines such as breathing exercises and strategies for dealing with stress that my students can use during art time.
I want to give all of my students the opportunity to experience a community where they feel safe and prepared for any challenges they may face!
