My Students
"I think I can, I think I can"...the little engine that could was determined and successful. Art experiences connected to learning activities can help students focus on possibilities rather than limitations.
My students are primary grade elementary students with special needs.
Their challenges include learning disabilities, autism, and social/behavioral difficulties, as well as more severe impairments due to birth defects or health issues. Most of them have language delays or poor articulation skills, many struggle with both. Students attend a neighborhood elementary school with a high rate of students qualifying for free and reduced lunches. The number of students in our building increased significantly following the tornado that destroyed many homes and businesses in our southwest Missouri town a year ago. Our neighborhood had minimal tornado damage, so more families have moved into housing that was available and more homes are being built in our attendance area. Greater numbers of students means larger class sizes. Considering all the many changes brought by the tornado it is evident that even in minimally damaged areas of town the impact has been huge.
My Project
Overcoming challenging circumstances requires focused effort fueled by determination and a believing that possibilities will be attained. (Our community knows first hand about that.) Learning challenges are just that...challenges. Overcoming learning challenges requires focused effort fueled by determination. Some students have lost the belief that they can achieve and be successful. Changing self perception regarding potential is key and can be built by acknowledging small, even tiny, successes. The materials I've requested, when added to our current supplies, will allow the inner artists to blossom, revealing possibilities. My students need a variety of supplies and art materials to express understandings and connections in personally meaningful ways. Many of the items will be used making lapbooks. Lapbooks provide a place to collect pieces of information related to a topic (artwork, small crafts, pictures, note cards, mini books, etc.) and allows the student opportunity to make connections and construct understandings...to be successful.
Successes multiply!
Art activities provide powerful connections, interest, and opportunities. Collecting small, individually unique, successes in a lapbook provides a keepsake to be revisited...a reminder that "I can!".
