Art Media Blitz

My Students

The art room is abuzz with activity. Art students are etching into their printing plates, making test prints or their edition. Later in the day, the crafts students embroidery on muslin, working on a pillow that they will always have. Each class, 5 per day, is busy, creative and learning.

Our high school is a gem.

It's an academic magnet public school. Our students come from all over the city. Three-quarters live below the poverty line. Over 90% of our students graduate and go onto college or trade school. Teaching here is very rewarding. My students are extremely bright and caring people. Their conversations draw me in because they are in touch and intelligent. This school is a very special place! The arts are a critical dimension in the education of our future leaders. My students have raised the bar for me as a teacher. I continuously strive to meet the needs of my students. By being able to provide adequate supplies, I can push my students to the next level.

My Project

We need the basics to get through the year. This list of supplies covers materials for painting, printmaking, paper sculpture and crafts. Every year students learn a wide range of skills. This year has seen painful budget cuts. My students need art supplies, such as printing blocks, ink, palette knives, assorted paper, watercolor refills, and craft materials. I need these materials so I can continue to bring rigorous lessons to my students. Classes are overcrowded, too. Last year's classes had 30 in each, but this year, I have 37 in each. Luckily the students are awesome and the only real problem is that they are using up my supply stock quickly. I can't believe how much yarn and embroidery thread was used this fall. I have a new group coming in the spring and I am out of the popular colors. The materials I selected will last us a good while so this request is my most down-to-earth, nuts-and-bolts list of materials ever. But we need them, and soon. Please help me continue to make my classes of the most popular in the school.

Art makes a difference in people's lives.

When students learn to express themselves through art, they develop more fully. High school students are exploring who they are and having rich art experiences enable them to look into themselves and the world. Students gain skills for self-expression as they learn art-making techniques. My project will make a difference to my students because I can share quality materials with them. These materials will be manipulated and transformed into artwork.
