My Students
"To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering." ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
So many of my students have come to America from war zones and war camps and have experienced great suffering in their young lives. Perhaps through art they will find meaning in their suffering.
My students are mainly immigrants from countries like Somalia, Ethiopia, and the Middle East.
They are not treated with open arms at public schools. Our school has become a safe place for them to practice their religion, wear the clothes of their religion without fear of judgment.
Although they are wonderful and dedicated students, they are living in poverty and neglect. In my classroom, I am able to open doors for these students...I can show them the beauty of art and music and dance and poetry. I can offer them hope, a ladder up.
I teach 322 students. Our school is not pretty on the outside but it has a very big heart, the people who work here care more about helping this community than they do about money...this life chose us.
We care about the future. We care about our country. We care about our students. We want desperately to help them reach their highest highs, and to avoid those darkest lows, we are doing everything we can to enlighten them to the beauty of this world.
My Project
With these materials, our students will be able to paint with brushes that that are not falling apart. They will learn to sew, not just with fabric but images and papers...stitching together complex ideas. They will learn how to use torn paper as an element of mystery in their paintings. They will learn to use printmaking as an beautiful way to tell a story, and to use the printed word allegorically.
With this small batch of materials, there are so many grand and exquisite things that these students will be able to do, they will want for not.
My students are eager to learn new techniques, to work with new mediums, to learn to make something they never thought they could.
With these simple materials, so many new ideas will be born.
From printmaking to weaving to sewing and painting, there is a world of creativity in this small package. There are the dreams of a child, the memories of home, and the expectations of tomorrow.
Thank you for allowing our students to receive this gift.
