My Students

Our school hosts an Arts Education program which operates throughout the school day as well as after school. Visual Arts students receive two ninety minutes periods per week to get instruction in fine arts and to explore their creative skills. There are art and quilting classes after school as well

We are an inner city Title One public school.

My students are energetic, vibrant, curious and talented. One of our favorite questions in the Visual Arts studio is "What if I". This type of thinking opens up the channel of creative possibilities for any given project. My students understand that there is no right and no wrong and the artist has permission to follow their own inspired and intuitive path to completion of their work. Every student at our school receives instruction in either visual arts, dance, music (strings), African dance, African drumming or a non performance art form such as history through media. After school we have additional dance, music, and visual arts classes, as well as quilting as a community service activity and photography. It is typical for teachers of the academic subjects to collaborate with arts teachers. We develop projects in which students needs information and skills from both subjects in order to excel. Arts set the pulse for this great school.

My Project

These materials will be on display in the classroom and available for use as "live models" for students to study the skeletal structure of the cat and the components that make up a flower. Visual learners will have the added advantage of studying science in the visual arts classroom. As we study the art of drawing cats and other animals in the art classroom, students will be involved with studying the same in their science classrooms. I am collaborating with the science teacher. They will learn that when drawing a cat, they are simply drawing the skin and fur on the skeleton, so it is important to know the structure of the skeleton and to understand the purpose of the bone placements. The flower is more than just beautiful shapes and colors, but an organism that has several inner parts which come together to create the image that one sees. Students learn this by visually dissecting the parts that make up a typical blossom. Books are resources for the class library.

The middle school visual arts studio should be a place of discovery and exploration.

Students need tools that will facilitate this process. We have oil pastels, pencils, paper, and other media available for our artists to use in the creation of works of art. With these models available in the classroom, students will have a more realistic perspective of the size and shapes of these wonders of nature, rather than to have to rely on photos from an internet search. Attention to details is enhanced.
