Art Is Necessary During Distance Learning

My Students

My students love art. Art lets them express the world around them. My students use art to communicate what they learn in Science, Social Studies, Math, and more. My students are all the students of our elementary school, 573 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

My Project

Art is a way of making sense of our world. In these unstable times, students need the opportunity for self expression more than ever.

In response to the shifting school models this year, I will be providing Visual Art education to my 573 students in grades K-5th through weekly video art lessons.

Supporting this campaign will provide students with quality paper for their projects. Students will have this outlet for expression, contemplation, and creative problem solving as a consistent distance learning component of their school year.

Usually our elementary students only have Visual Arts with me for one quarter, and I am able to prepare the art supplies for each class. Instead, I am creating packets of quality drawing, watercolor, and construction paper for every student to take home each quarter. As a result, I am going through much more paper than normal. With shipping costs, paper is also an expensive item to order through the standard purchase order channels.

My weekly videos will teach students how to responsibly use quality paper with their school supplies, such as the oil pastels and watercolors our students are instructed to have on hand. The right supplies will help create artworks the students are proud of.

Students will share their creations back to their teachers and classmates online, celebrating their learning, practicing giving and receiving constructive feedback. This continued practice will deepen their creative learning and a much needed sense of community during distance (or hybrid) learning.

At our elementary school art is used as a tool for learning. These art experiences will build upon and reinforce their learning in core content areas, creating meaning and depth across subject areas.
