Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I am proud to say that the valedictorian of the school, despite being an immigrant who moved here only 6 years ago, was an art student of mine who was accepted to several prestigious art institutes around the United States. As my fourth year at my school, I watched her grow up from freshman to a senior and am proud to say that as her art teacher, I inspired her life and her future. She is just one of several students who are excited about and live and breathe art here at my school.

My school is a place that students, despite their background, come to learn, create and succeed.

As a title I school, my school has its struggles such as overpopulation, a majority of students receive free and reduced lunch, and a large contingency are English language learners and have only recently moved to the US. However, it also as its great points. The teachers here truly care about their students, we offer several academies and a variety of accelerated classes.

Students who take my art classes learn skills that they use throughout all of their other classes.

My Project

The art department at my school has two classrooms side by side with doors that lead out to a large patio. After teaching here for many years, I am determined to utilize that beautiful outdoor space. The patio, which is partially covered by an awning, overlooks several trees, a lake area, and portions of the rest of the school building. The art students need tables and easels so that they can sit and create art outside. The outdoor picnic tables will serve as tables and chairs and will withstand the weather as most will be located under an awning and the few out in the sun will have the red sun shade umbrellas. The 20 easels will be able to be used outside on the patio to set up canvases, inside the classroom and anywhere else the students want to set up for their artwork.

I would like the space to be a place to create art and see the beauty of the world.

So, in addition, I plan to have the students add murals to the walls and plants to this outdoor space as an extension of the beauty we like to see in our art classroom and out of the students.

When complete, this project will allow 2 different teachers the ability to have all of their art classes outside whenever desired. The students will have places to sit and set up canvases on easels in the gorgeousness of the Florida air and sun. The area as a whole will be an artistic extension of the art department and its classrooms.
