Art in the City: Sketchpads and Pencils for Budding Artists!
My students need 26 art kits, including their own sketchpad, drawing pencils, colored pencils, eraser, and sharpener.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. M.'s classroom raised $316
This project is fully funded
I am a high school science teacher teaching art class. I teach at a unique, wonderful charter school in the middle of DC. Our students come from some of the poorest parts of the city and are often the first in their family to attend college.
While my school has passionate teachers, dedicated administration, and some very talented students, we lack a few basics. For example, instead of hiring dedicated art, music, and dance teachers, regular classroom teachers volunteer to teach those classes. This is my second year at the school, my first year teaching art. I am going to be teaching three sessions of art, each with 26 students.
Although I was apprehensive about teaching a subject outside of my expertise, I have been having a great time. The students crave a creative outlet, and it is so exciting to see a student move from "I hate art," to showing pride and excitement in a project in a month. We've already completed self portraits, experimentation in cubism, and paper mache cultural masks. We're moving on to mosaics next! I've enjoyed being creative in acquiring materials (the free section of craigslist is great!), but there are a few things I really need. I would love for each of my students to have their own art kit, complete with sketchpad, pencils, colored pencils, sharpener, and eraser. I believe my students would take more pride and ownership in their work if they had the proper supplies. I also love the idea of my students having a sketch pad full of work at the end of the quarter to display.
Teaching this art class has been such a rewarding experience for me and my students. With a budget of $2.50 per student, however, I do struggle to give the students access to quality supplies. This would make such a difference to my class. Thank you so much for reading.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
