My students need paint, rope, tri-pods, and hooks to create a painting pendulum.

My Students
"Science is boring, confusing, it's not fun..." Many teachers hear this statement every year, including myself. My students thrive and excel when I can make their learning hands on and fun! That is why our next project will be a STEAM projecting, tying together science and art.
I have a very energetic, social group of 18 4th graders, 9 boys and 9 girls.
They love moving around, learning through hands-on activities, and making learning fun. I enjoy being able to present them with activities that they will enjoy doing and will remember for years to come. My students love doing art and I love figuring out how to tie it to a standard, and getting them hooked on new ideas.
Our school is in a more rural setting, in a smaller school district then many around us. We have a close knit community and support each other the best we can.
My Project
My students will be learning about the forces of motion and gravity through art and science by attaching a paint bottle to a pendulum.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) has become a very popular movement these days in the school setting, with the hopes of motivating more students to choose one of those career paths. Adding the A for ART helps students be more creative with STEM.
A pendulum is a fixed object hung from a point so it can swing freely back and forth due to the force of gravity. We tell the students that it is like a swing. A swing moves back and forth just like a pendulum due to the force of gravity.
Pendulum painting will be an activity that I feel my students will remember years beyond elementary school.
They get to walk away with new knowledge of force of motion and gravity as well as a beautiful piece of art that they can then share with their family and friends. This will spark a teaching moment for them when someone asks how they created it! I love having my students become the teacher's and sharing their knowledge with others.
