Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever tried to learn something that just did not click? Well, basic language arts and math concepts just do not click quickly for my students with intellectual disabilities.

I teach at an urban low-socioeconomic school and work full-time with students with mild-moderate intellectual disabilities in grades 1-3.

My students struggle to learn and maintain basic skills in language arts and math and require repetitive practice of the alphabet, counting, and word identification. Most of the students are boys and need interactive and hands-on activities to master and generalize concepts. Many of the students do not have a home environment to reinforce and extend school learning due to language barriers and lack of resources available in the home setting.

My Project

The resources I am asking for will allow me to provide more interactive, fun and art-based practice of basic concepts of letter, number and sight word recognition as well as the concept of the calendar. The crayons/crayon holder/rubbing plates and art trays would allow for activities that will improve color recognition, fine motor development, language development and the ability to individualize each activity for students. The paper trimmer would allow me to cut paper into smaller sizes to more efficient use the paper supply I have been given. The student-made calendars will allow the students to connect the abstract concepts of time with an art project that they created. And the "offices" or partitions would allow students to work without distractions when needed.

Learning the basics is critical for developing a strong foundation for beginning reading and math skills.

Fun and exciting alternative activities are needed to continue to engage students with intellectual disabilities as they practice skills over and over. With exciting and multi-sensory learning tools, my students will increase their learning engagement and willingness to practice difficult skills.
