This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach visual art at an elementary school. I service students from PreK to 8th grade. My students are caring, full of creativity, and eager to learn. They jump at the opportunity to make new things.

They love when they are able to express themselves and share a little bit of their story through drawing, painting, writing, and music.

My Project

My younger students love to come to art class and create. They also love to read stories. I often start a unit with a story about a topic or an artist. This helps the students make deeper connections and be more engaged in the lesson. Reading a story often helps to introduce the topic and leads to great class discussion's! Right now, I am playing the story on YouTube, but I would love to have physical copies of the stories to read to the students.

Reading stories is art is powerful because it also helps integrate literacy into the art room.

It make a connection for the students that art is not separate from their other subjects. I love making this connection when they are young.
